Sea of Legends is a sandbox adventure game by Guildhall Studios. There is a required companion app, which is nice but, it was released via Kickstarter and the app was not quite yet ready right away. It is getting there and I am very much enjoying this game. You can sail around taking many various actions like in Merchants and Marauders, but you are much more free to take any path as almost anything can earn you victory through glory and renown if you are successful. It is more Ameri-flashy than Euro-thinky.
The Kickstarter also came with a large second box of expansion content, which I will get to painting later this summer.
When you play you use the Spanish Armada and two other NPC factions. The other two factions can win, if left alone by the privateers (players).
Spanish Armada
These just consist of galleons which ply to seas looking for Spanish ports to liberate, or Pirates to hunt.
Dread Fleet
Undead former Seamen from all factions, these skeletal sailors seek to unite into a colossus and take over ports. The large miniatures in the game are BIG.
Children of Tlaloc
These merfolk worship a sea monster, and are looking for relics with which to bring her to life.
British Empire
These represent the British Navy, and seek to capture Spanish ports. After accumulating enough wealth this way, the Admiral of the Navy will arrive, and if they amass enough wealth, they will stamp out all opposition in the area (and win the game).
I was encouraged to paint these bases like wood - and I am so happy I went with my wife's suggestion! I'd maybe make it a bit more 'grey' vs rich 'brown' next time.
