Gathering of Gamers
In the social world of tabletop gaming, at the top there are big splash events like Expos and Conventions, built around companies showing off and selling their wares. Then there are a growing segment of events like Summits, Gatherings, and smaller "Con"s that are centered around meeting up with old friends and making new ones around the activity of gaming. Then there are local Meetups and other events where you can meet new players and learn new games. We'd love to attend the middle range type of events more often, but travel out of Alaska is not cheap or easy. Anchorage does not host any board gaming events, and only one called Urza Battlezone for tabletop wargaming.
Thankfully a group of gamers has remained friends to the point that several of them that have moved back tot he Lower 48, make an annual pilgrimage back to Anchorage for a weekend binge of board gaming, alternately called ChrisCon/NalanCon/NalickCon... based on the names of those making the pilgrimage.
In 2020 this took place in January over the course of a four day and a half day weekend. Amid bright sun, pristine white snow, and sub-zero temperatures, by my count, fourteen different gamers played at least 52 different games, and consumed copious amounts of snacks, orange beer, soda, and bullshit. No Thanks generated the most amount of bullshit, but Letter Jam provided it's fair share as well. (Note: Post ChrisCon we learned that 6Nimt is a good generator of BS as well)
Sometimes a boardgame just has to be used as a pillow backstop. We avoided, and I quote, "Taun-Taun Con: I thought it smelled bad on the outside" by remaining clean and well showered, mostly.
In light of the current pandemic climate, I sure hope we can get together to do this kind of tournament again next winter. What a great group of people:
