Battlelore - Base Set - Dwarf units

September 16, 2012

Started painting the last remaining units from my Battlelore set, the Iron Dwarves. They intimidated me, let's be honest. For one, everyone knows dwarves drink a lot and get pissed off easy. Secondly, they are organized into Scottish clans in Battlelore, as a fantasy mercenary unit for the English. Thus, they are wearing kilts and have sashes about their bodies that have little cross hatch patterns. This looked hard to do justice.

However, I've discovered that the overall look is pretty good if you use a have a decent 0 brush, and give the area a good wash (or glaze) after the base coat/initial cross hatch highlight. I'm working on lighting up my blue unit scheme and then we'll 'ave a go at 'em!

--Update - These units are complete as of October 1, 2012.

EDIT - A look back.
Ok so it's 2023 and looking back at these, I'm proud of what I did - but boy it sure seems funny. I can't even see the 'cross-hatching' I attempted to apply to these kilts. I would use much higher contrast, and probably apply a highlight to these figures if I were to paint them now. Painting like anything in life is a progression, and I'm happy with these guys and where they helped get me to with my painting hobby today.
