Holiday Havok 2023 - a Blitz Bowl Tournament

Fourth annual Blitz Bowl tournament - Holiday Havok 2023!

We played over the course of a two months, using the new Ultimate Blitz Bowl rules. The Khorne, Goblin, Chaos Chosen and Halfling teams were absent from the tournament due to the Mootland War. (I still have not assembled all these figures needed for the Ultimate Rules) 😄

One new team debuted in this tournament, the Lizardmen from the distant continent of Lustria. The team has a color scheme inspired by the southwest of The New World, with creams, turquoise, oranges and browns.

Open Play Round

In game 1 three Lustria Instagators (Lizardmen) charged to the middle of the pitch, starting a scrum that immediately got the fans on their feet, pleasing their Coach. The Grymhold Grudge Bearers pounded them into the AstroTurf, but the Instagators skilled and sly Skinks kicked the ball backward out of the scrum each time. Even two big Lizard blockers were carried off the pitch at the hands of the Dwarves! Yet no on etook notice of the strong arm tactics of the Grudgebearers. Eventually a third skink ran on the pitch, hats off to the extra fast Chameleon and he was Inspired to Sprint to a TD, and a sudden death victory! Now the dwarves have another grudge to bear. Lizards 10  Dwarves 0

In game 2 - Fan favorite Shambling Undead team the Casket Jumpers took a early lead but then the former gladiators from Puswater scored the first TD. Multiple Balls ensued, and the Nurgle players scored two more TDs! Eventually this orgy of touchdowns emptyed the field of Nurgle players. The undead dominated the middle of the field and won in a game that was not as close as the score. Undead 26 Nurgle 20.

Elite Eight

Quarter Final #1 - The first quarterfinal was between the Skittering Gutterpunks (Skaven) and the South Sea Coast Breakers (Sea Elf Union). The skaven score their first touchdown with a sly sidestep away from an over eager elven lineman. On the next play the elves take the ball and Gang Up on a poor ratman. Soon thereafter 3 balls were on the pitch! The Skittering Gutter Punks proceeded to score many touchdowns and also injure several of the Coast Breakers. The scoreboard operator ran out of chalk, and so the referees started counting the score on their fingers and toes! The Union thrower tried to make a comeback, making a spectacular throw over the statues on the pitch, but it was too little too late and the Skaven move on to the next round! Skaven 46 Elven Union 30

Quarter Final #2 - In a matchup of neutral leaning elves of different flavors, the Twilight Eternals hosted the Dunestar ShadowKnives. The Wood Elves took an early lead on some nifty moves and completed risky pass to a lineman. The Dark Elves came back to tie it up at 16-16 with a quick strike run and causing several injuries. After a wide open mid game, and the Wardancer showing them all how is done, the Eternals put in a new wave of reserves. A Witch Elf had the ball and a chance at game clinching TD if she could injure an elf lineman standing in the endzone in front of her, she knocked him down, but the armor save was made! Very little scoring occurred in the endgame as the elves scrapped back and forth - to a narrow as cane be 1 point finish. This game deserves a grudge match for sure -- Wood Elves 27 Dark Elves 26.

Quarter Final #3 - The orcs steamed onto the field clearly over confident. They grabbed the initial ball and ran it up the side, after both sides Got Moving. The skeletons couldn’t take down the orc lineman runner with the ball, and he was able to pitch it over the fire sconces to another linemen for a TD! But on ball launch the Wight injured the Raider thrower and slipped in for a TD of their own, ending the game, ironically, with Sudden Death  Undead 17 Orcs 7.

Quarter Final #4 - The Harbingers dominated the center of pitch, scoring a quick touchdown, as the Lizards failed to make anything materialize. A skink tried to run the ball up the left flank, but was pushed into the crowd and injured. Soon a riotous crowd quickly swept the befuddled lizardmen off the pitch. The Humans from Hochland displayed their strength and toughness against the ‘gators, but will have to show speed and resilience to defeat their next opponent, the Twilight Eternals. Humans 14 Lizardmen 0

Semi-Finals

Semi-Final #1 - This match started off even, with both teams jockeying for position in between the two large columns on the underground pitch. The Punks held their own at first, putting out a ghoul, and showing team organization. But then the mummy reached the scrum, and the tides changed… his bulk controlled the fight, occupying three Skaven is a big melee. In the meantime, a zombie made off with the ball! Eventually handing it off, with his hand 🤚 , to the reserve ghoul, who ran around the Skaven, blitzed to score and also showboat.  The crowd was riled up, - 1 point away from suddenly rushing the pitch! But the Skaven held on to the edge of hope - one big play away. A big play that would never come as they failed in all attempts to score, locked into combat with the undead. Small consolation to the ratmen, but the mummy was eventually carted off in pieces… the Casket Jumpers are moving on to the Holiday Havok 2023 finals! Undead 25 Skaven 14

Semi-Final #2 - This raucous game opened with a second turn touchdown by the Hochland Catcher after he rolled with the hit from the Wardancer. An elf took the next ball up the left, distracting the humans. He then threw the ball back to the catcher who ran to the 1 meter line. The wardancer joined him fighting off blocks from a human Lineman and Blitzer… and the elves scored the next turn. The humans lineman took the bouncing ball after launch into the end zone — score 8-11 elves. Wood elf thrower Jordyn Turissleaf ran picking up the ball and crashing into another lineman. The humans tried to counter, but some ganging up and a TD sealed the sudden death victory! Wood Elves 22 Humans 10

Holiday Havok Finals 2023

The undead rushed the middle, with the mummy and wright being knocked down but getting up time after time, eventually taking possession off the ball.

There was a scrum in which a skeleton and wight were injured, one by a diving tackle from a lithe elven Lineman. The tiny skeleton in a cage ball bounced while the mummy injured the wood elf thrower and an elf lineman was knocked down. A skeleton managed to hang onto the ball long enough to throw it to Rum Tut the mummy... Sweeping the action cards to end this championship in sudden death in the second fastest game on record, and the most unlikely ending ever! Undead 13 Wood Elves 3
